The Way (is/it)

2024

Motorised fly

This piece consists of a single housefly attached to an Arduino and vibration motor, tapping on a window. It would appear that it’s making an effort to get past this human-made barrier and is unable to see the glass. However, the fly is buzzing in Morse code, endlessly spelling out two words: “is” and “it”.  Depending on where this sequence is started from, the fly is repeatedly communicating “it is” or “is it?”.

The title of the sculpture can also be read with different interpretations. The word "way" can describe a method or style of doing something; it can also refer to a path or route for traveling along. Due to the size and positioning of this work, it could easily be overlooked and requires audience attention to be found.
