60 motorised minnows
This work consists of 60 motorised minnows flipping and flopping on the floor. Sixty is a unit we use to divide and measure time. The sculpture is set to a timer with the minnows switching on and off, acting as a clock. The clock is barely readable and continuously runs, with a full cycle lasting one minute.
As smaller-sized fish, minnows are caught and commodified by humans as bait. They are omnivorous and opportunistic eaters, allowing them to adapt to varying changes in their environment. Due to this resilience, they are used to measure pollution levels in waters.
The work highlights a collective struggle. Minnows, which are social fish, usually swim together in murmurations. However, in this situation, they are in a shared state of suffering due to their environment lacking water. Connected by the same energy source, the minnows, motors, and wires appear as a single organism.
